=====================

One of the hardest things I have ever had to do was bury my wife.

The second-hardest thing would be watching my twelve-year-old daughter fall to her knees as the preacher uttered his final words of comfort before her mother’s casket was slowly lowered into the grave.

She was the perfect girl and had every man in Livingston, Montana, mesmerized by her looks and her personality.

Sergeant Sawyer. I’d like to think Claire would be proud. I was promoted the year after she died, and it had been something I’d been hoping to achieve. Her being there to see it would have made the achievement even sweeter.

Leaving Chicago was easy. Especially after Kevin, my fiancé, decided his slutty neighbor was worth losing me over. I gave him four years of my life, and in turn his overactive sex drive picked a twenty-one-year-old floozy. He’d even had the gall to take her in our bed.

She had a gorgeous smile and kind eyes. But the idea of feeling an attraction toward a woman other than Claire made me feel guilty.

The problem is when I consider dating another woman, I feel like I’m cheating on her.

“I don’t know what I can offer you,” he confessed. “But I know I’m willing to see where this goes. It feels good being with you. It’s refreshing.”

I wondered if he truly was ready to move forward or if he was only forcing himself to.

“You took her to the lake. I overheard Uncle Jackson when I was on the phone with Gran,” she replied in a clipped tone. “Mom loved that lake, and you took that girl there. I can’t believe you would do that. It was just wrong.”

“I was perfectly happy before you decided to replace my mother with some random woman.”

Never, and I do mean never, will any woman replace your mother. She was one of a kind.”

Being with Amber felt so right, it was almost scary. In the back of my mind, my guilt about Claire sat heavy, pulling at me every chance it got.

Eric had tried more than once to come between Claire and me. Seeing him so close to Amber only fueled my already unstable mood.

Then you showed up here, and for the first time in so long, I feel like I got a part of me back. A part I thought I lost forever.”

“I can’t be your void filler, Ryan,” she whispered.

As Amber’s eyes fluttered open, she stared up at me, and something inside me changed in that moment. She was unbelievably beautiful, and any reservations lingering within me faded. I knew for sure now that Amber was my second chance.

I immediately spotted Ryan across the yard, standing next to the grill, and his bright smile captured me from across the pool of people. The only problem with that smile was that it wasn’t directed toward me but at the petite woman with auburn hair who stood next to him, hanging on his every word.

I spent the next hour watching the woman paw at Ryan. Every time she placed her hand on his arm or leaned into him while laughing at something he said, I felt more and more nauseous.

Noah shook his head. “Damn, Ryan, Amber has been here for over an hour already. You were so preoccupied with Zoey you didn’t even see her sitting less than thirty feet away from you.”

Life’s not about the money you have or the car you drive. It’s about the people you spend even the dullest moments with and the memories you create that hold you together, even when you feel like you’re crumbling inside.
